  2. Students walk out

High school students in Créteil, just outside Paris, start blockading their school. Within days, dozens of schools follow.

  3. It goes national

More than a thousand high schools are affected by October 1. By October 6 the Justice Ministry counts over 5,000 arrests, most of them minors.

  4. Washington weighs in

Donald Trump posts that the unrest is about mass migration, not schools.

  5. 3,000 more teachers

The government promises 3,000 extra teachers and repairs to old school buildings. The blockades keep going.

  6. France explodes

550,000 people march across the country, 800,000 according to the CGT union. Shops are looted in Paris, the 1883 town hall in Limoges burns and the base of the Marianne statue on Place de la République is damaged.

  7. Anger and shame

Trump posts "France is burning!" and blames immigration, while French officials point to ultra-left groups and looters. Macron addresses the nation, condemns the violence and promises full transparency on the police response.

  8. Curfews and a budget showdown

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu calls for partial curfews in the cities hit hardest, with a crucial budget vote only days away.
